Merri was rescued as an orphaned chick by our dedicated volunteer and Manager of Avian Wellness, Kira. She was lovingly rehabilitated until she grew into a strong, healthy hen. Merri's spirited personality quickly became apparent—she never quite got along with other chickens and was always ready to challenge other hens!
At the time, our sweet one-eyed rooster, Gary, was in need of a companion. We decided to introduce the two, and it was love at first sight. Gary's calm, gentle nature perfectly balanced Merri's bold, bossy personality, and they spent two wonderful years together. After Gary passed away, Merri found companionship with Goober, our blind rooster. When Goober unexpectedly passed away, Merri was paired with Louie, another special-needs rooster who was adopted at the Sanctuary due to a permanently fractured hip and a broken wing from being hit by a car.
Over the years, Merri has opened her heart to each of her rooster companions. She has shown that, with the right match, she truly thrives. Watching her grow more trusting and affectionate has been a meaningful reminder of how a little love and patience can allow every animal blossom. We are grateful that Merri has found safety, love, and companionship at the Sanctuary, where she continues to flourish alongside her gentle roo-friend, Louie.
